A sweet and caring person much loved by family and friends passed away on December 2, 2014. Ruth Aileen McKinney Bass was born on August 13, 1921 in Rose Hill, Iowa to Mabel McCord and A. Ray McKinney. Mom was always proud of her McKinney heritage and being known as one of the "determined and independent McKinney girls". She was also proud of being an Iowa farm girl and growing up on the farm in New Sharon and would tell anyone she met about it. She graduated from Oskaloosa high School (Iowa) where she met James E. Bass whom she married on April 26, 1942. Mom had many hobbies and interests, but she especially loved to travel and it didn't matter whether she was following Dad to his duty stations, driving across the country in both directions to visit family, flying to Scotland to visit ancestral sites or riding copilot on dog rescue transports. She loved all the horses, dogs, gerbils and birds that passed through her life and especially the antics of Fox terriers Mandy Sue and Jack Joe Bob; though she was not too thrilled with the 20 frogs that got turned loose in the house. After her husband passed away, she attended USU Aggies football and basketball with her daughter. She didn't understand the intricacies of the game but she enjoyed the atmosphere and Aggie ice cream. She was a long time member of the Community Presbyterian Church in Brigham City. Surviving are her two children, son, James R. (Mary) Bass and daughter, Janet B. Bass; three grandchildren, James A. (Karen) Bass, Pamela A. (Joe) Swortzel, Karen D. (Michael) Sutherland; seven great grandchildren, Jackson Bass, Grant Bass, Melanie Bass, Kendall Toms, Kathryn Sutherland, Johnathan Sutherland and Michaela Sutherland and sisters, Jean Wyland and Grace Lester. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, sister, Kathryn and brother, John (killed in action Leyte Island, Philippines). The family would like to thank the staff at Brigham City Community Hospital, Integrity hospice and Ali's Angels for their kind and compassionate care of Mom. Per Mom's request, there will be no viewing. A visitation one hour prior to the service is planned at Community Presbyterian Church. Funeral services will be Monday, December 8, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at Community Presbyterian Church, 311 South 100 East, Brigham City. Interment will be in the Brigham City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, make a donation to the Community Presbyterian Church of Brigham City in Mom's name. Mom, we will now be able to tell the stories about you that you thought we didn't know.
