BRIGHAM CITY - Don Carlos Call was born March 9,1916 at the home of his parents, Benjamin Carlos Call and Hannah Louis Bywater, the sixth of nine children. He died January 4, 2013 surrounded by his children. He was reared in a home of love, faith, prayer, discipline, forgiveness, chores, and perseverance. Dad had a happy childhood in Brigham City. He attended Lincoln Elementary and Box Elder High School where he excelled in track and field and vocal music. He extended his education by attending BYU, and after his third year accepted a call to serve as a missionary in the British Mission. After returning home he married Marie Stander on December 30, 1941, in the St. George Temple. He finished his fourth year at BYU, earning a degree in chemistry with minors in math and physics, along with a teaching certificate. Don served in the Navy during WWII, and as a seaman attended sonar school in Chicago, Illinois. He taught school for thirty-one years, interrupting his teaching career to work as a quality control chemist at Thiokol for several years. Dad taught the life principles he learned from his parents to his children. He was generous with his time in fulfilling a broad range of callings in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He and Marie served together as missionaries in the Mississippi Jackson Mission. Heartfelt thanks for the excellent care given our Dad by VistaCare Hospice; Brett and Debbie of Hospice for Utah; and all the wonderful nurses, CNAs, and aides at the George A. Wahlen Ogden Veterans Home. Don is survived by his daughters Marilyn (Brent) Johnson, Karla (Robert) Bugnet, both of Ogden, his sons Stan (Lynda) Call of Bountiful, Raymond (Joann) Call of Batesville, Indiana, and Robert Call of South Jordan, 29 grandchildren and 55 great grandchildren, his siblings Ben (Meryl) Call, Joan (Evan) Terry, and was preceded in death by his wife, Marie, one son, James Stander Call, one grandson, and his parents and siblings, Marie, Phyllis, Louise, Omer, and Willard. Funeral service will be on Thursday, January 10, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. in Brigham City LDS 3rd Ward Chapel, 203 North 200 West. The family will greet friends on Thursday at the church from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Interment will be in the Brigham City Cemetery, where military honors will be accorded by the Combined Veterans Honor Guard.
Merrell just emailed me today to let me know of Don's passing. I'm sorry that we won't be able to make it to the funeral. Please know that my thoughts are with all your family. Of all the Call family, I feel very close to the Don Call family. I remember visiting many times and loved hearing the stories that the grown-ups told. And I remember playing at your big home on 3rd west. Jeff and I send our love and condolences.
