Whitney Larsen Johnson

Graveside Service: Saturday, June 16th at 11 a.m. at Brigham City Cemetery, 495 East 500 South, Brigham City, Utah, where military honors will be accorded by the Box Elder County Combined Veterans Honor Guard.
Whitney Larsen Johnson of Marquette, MI died on Thursday, June 7, 2012 at Eastwood Nursing Center in Negaunee, Michigan of natural causes.
Whitney was born to George Wallace Johnson and his wife Lucy Christine Larsen on July 11, 1927 in Brigham City, Utah. He grew up on the Johnson farm with his older brother and three sisters.
He entered the US Navy near the end of World War II and returned to service in the Marshall Islands during the Korean War. He married and was sealed for time and eternity to Martha Elaine Jensen on August 30, 1954 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He was awarded a PhD in biostatistics through the University of Minnesota.
He worked for Virginia Polytechnic Institute, then the state of Virginia before finishing his employment in 1993 with a 21 year career as the Director of Data and Telephone Systems at Northern Michigan University.
Whitney valued his relationship to God, family, and community as demonstrated by his commitment to volunteer efforts. He represented the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints for three years as a missionary to Denmark in 1947-1950. He provided many years of leadership to the local and regional congregations of the church.
He was proud to tell everyone about his nine Eagle Scout sons, his two daughters, and their families. For the Hiawathaland Council of the Boy Scouts of America, he served as treasurer, board member, and president. He was a recipient of the Silver Beaver Award. Finally, he served on the board of the United Way for many years in addition to being president of the board at one point.
Mr. Johnson was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters Ruth, Bernice, and Carol, in addition to two granddaughters, Pearl and Morgan. He is survived by his wife, Martha; their eleven children, Charles (Laurie), Kathy Newby (John), Roger (Kathleen), H. Peter, James (Janice), G. Wallace (Amy), Curt (Mary), Eric (Morgana), Stuart (Beth), Steven, Elaine Hewitt (Curt); 46 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, and his older brother Curtis.

Whitney received excellent care during his final days at Marquette General Hospital and Eastwood Nursing Center, and had a much appreciated consult from Lake Superior Hospice. The family is grateful for the outpouring of love, concern, and prayers and requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to The Boy Scouts of America, The United Way, or The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints Humanitarian Fund.
